Rotary Centennial Plaza set to open on the May long weekend
Posted on: Wednesday, May 13, 2009
After a long and harsh winter, which has pushed it's way into the spring, the opening of the Rotary Centennial Plaza on Friday, May 15 (weather permitting) is welcomed news. The Rotary Centennial Plaza opened last year and was an immediate hit with the public. This community project was conceived by the Rotary Clubs of Lethbridge as a way to celebrate the centennials of the Province of Alberta, the City of Lethbridge and Rotary International. The plaza is located just east of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. It is circular in shape and is set amongst ornamental flower beds. The water feature is encircled by a bench wall which provides a variety of seating and viewing opportunities. The water feature is unique in Western Canada. A series of pop-up jets provide a variety of spray events - all of which are choreographed to lights and music. On calm days, the jets at the centre of the fountain reach heights of up to 15 feet. Water drains away continuously and is recycled, allowing for no standing water. New musical selections are added each year. The addition of the water feature coincided with improvements to the Galt Gardens pergola area, including a food servery for special events and new washroom facilities. Visitors to the park during the evening will be able to observe the water jets lit up with a variety of LED lights.
HOURS OF OPERATION: 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily (water runs continuously throughout the day and plays one musical show every fifteen minutes). PARK EVENT BOOKINGS AND CUSTOMER INQUIRIES: 403 320-3013
